Should I Tip my Movers?

should I tip my movers

You know it’s customary to tip food servers, rideshare drivers and hairstylists: But what about movers? This is a pressing concern now that you’re moving to Phoenix.

Do you tip commercial movers? And if so, what is a customary gratuity for movers? We have you covered.

Unlike servers and stylists, movers don’t expect tips. But they appreciate receiving a reward for good service. Now that you’re headed to Arizona, you might ask yourself: “What should I tip movers?” Defining an industry standard is tricky, so let’s consider a few factors:

Rewarding good work

As your moving crew finishes up, think about how the day went. Did the movers show up on time? Did they listen, ask questions, provide quality advice and put your mind at ease? Did your belongings end up in the right places? Did the moving crew go above and beyond?

If your answer to these questions is “Yes,” you should tip the crew. As for the amount, well, that depends on how happy you are with the service you received. More on that in a bit.

Difficult move?

One thing to consider when deciding how much to tip your movers in the Phoenix area is the difficulty of the job. Did the crew have to negotiate stairs or cramped hallways? If they safely carried a piano, artwork or other fragile items, you should tip to show your appreciation.

Also consider the weight of items moved, and how many pieces and boxes the crew carried. Did your move involve large furniture? Did the move take a long time? Moving heavy appliances on a hot summer day might warrant a larger tip. If you made lots of specific requests, and saw them carried out, a robust tip is in order.

Customary gratuity for movers

The going rate for a tip for a local move is 5% of the bill, if the customer is happy. For multi-day, cross-country moves, tips can range from $40 to $200 per person. Of course, how much you tip is up to you and your level of satisfaction.

How should you distribute the tip? Determine whether you’d like to hand it to the foreman, or to each crew member individually. (Remember, the crew moving you out may not be the same one moving you in: Be sure to tip movers when you have the chance.) If a few movers worked particularly hard, feel free to give them a slightly larger tip. Otherwise, split the reward equally among the crew.

One last suggestion: Show your appreciation by offering the crew cold drinks, especially on hot days.
